The lighting simulator ordered by the city of Espoo and Aalto CRE was used for researching city models in lighting design. This was accomplished utilizing the new lighting features of the Unity-game engine together with industry standard IES- light profiles.
The simulations 3D environment was built using the existing Otaniemi city model, the planning phase Aalto university campus building together with road and environmental –plans. Additionally, the future Raide-Jokeri light rail system was integrated to the whole as a traffic simulation. Besides loading new IES-files into the model you can add editable street-lamps to the environment. As the lights are simulated in real-time you can see the effect immediately. The added lamp groups can be used for energy calculations and for testing various smart lamp functionalities, like movement sensors
